CurlFest 2017

THE EXPERIENCE
CurlFest Festival is truly an amazing experience. July 15, 2017, was my first time participating in the many festivities that can found at the event but it will not be the last. There are great foods, professional hair dressers sporting their latest accessories and products and lots of music for entertainment. I think the greatest thing about the event is its message and everything that it stands for. It is an event for all women interested in living a natural hair lifestyle to do that freely. At this event, you will see everything from short wavy cuts to big fluffy curls to unbreakable dreadlocks. I truly love that all different types of women of African descent can come together and appreciate one another. WHO CAN BE MAD AT THAT? As for the past three years, CurlFest has been held in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY and has been a HOT spot for business promotion. I myself have followed this trend and have decided this year to take some pictures of the many individuals who've attended. Enjoy!
This event is envisioned by Curly Girl Collection and empowered by SheaMoisture. They both take pride in their involvement in the support of all natural hair trends and I quickly took notice of this. Trust me, the support here is real! There is no need to be discouraged if you are not sporting huge flowing curls because there will always be someone with your hairstyle and texture. It's beautiful to see bald women walking around just as confidently as long-haired women. This is especially important for younger women and little girls looking for role models. Growing up in a world where women of African descent are often simultaneously scrutinized and fetishized for their uncontrollable natural beauty, can cause people to embody self-oppressive feelings. This may be a bold statement to some but to me, events such as this one serve as THE CURE to such self-oppressive feelings! All women should take their daughters to this event! Why, because the people here are very open to new comers and instead of being distanced from the crowd they will be embraced. Ultimately feeling free to ask anything they please due to "family" driven atmosphere. There are also beauticians on standby willing to assist you with your natural journey. They are more than willing to twist, braid, wash, blow-dry, pin, curl, knot, coil, tie, wrap, lock or anything else you may desire to be done to your natural hair.
"Looking out at the sea of curls, I couldn't help but smile in awe. To see people coming together to celebrate something unapologetically natural was so beautiful. It was such a memorable event full of black girl magic"
